The Kuba kingdom , now the Democratic Republic of Congo, was founded in the 17th century. Composed of more than 17 ethnic groups, it expanded through alliances between these diverse groups while its artistic industry flourished.

Kuba fabric forms the basis of the ceremonial attire of royalty. Both men and women wear Kuba fabric skirts during ceremonial rituals. The fabric patterns vary according to gender.

The fabric expresses wealth , hierarchy, and personal transitional states. These geometric motifs are composed through juxtapositions of very different elements and are characterized by abrupt changes in form.
